Environmental Justice Toronto
http://ejtoronto.wordpress.com/past-activities/
A grassroots group of creative individuals who are passionate about our Mother Earth and what is currently happening to Her through the destructive extractive industries like the Alberta Tar Sands and Canadian Mining companies. With 75% of the worlds mining companies based in Canada, (many of them in Toronto!!) many of us refer to Toronto as the Belly of the Capitalist Beast!! We work with communities who are at the front lines of destruction, taking direction and then delivering those messages to the CEO's in their place of work. (Only when the option of flying representatives from Alberta are out of our budget!) We are based in Toronto, and have recently discussed working on local issues, (Rob Ford, Transit City, Metrolinx.) But our current experience has been on Tar Sands.
While we are all affected in our own way by things like the Tar Sands and the harm that Mother Earth is experiencing, in our group we feel it is important to realize that often those most affected are also the most marginalized and silenced. By acknowledging this disparity, it is our hope that we really seek to understand the complexity of being based in Toronto, and working with allies from B.C, Alberta and U.S.
It has been an amazing experience, for 2 years now, we have been roadtripping out to camps and trainings, invited to First Nations Territory, and been honoured to learn from fellow activists, Elders and indigenous activists that have been kicking ass for hundreds of years!
