Belo Monte Dam would be the one of the largest, most devastating infrastructure projects ever to be built in the Amazon. It would divert the flow of the Xingu River and devastate an extensive area of the Brazilian rainforest, displace over 20,000 people and threaten the survival of indigenous peoples. On August 26, the Brazilian government signed the concession to build the Belo Monte Dam, despite concerns over its financial viability, growing resistance amongst indigenous groups and social movements, and predictions of technical experts that the dam will be one of the worst engineering projects in Brazil's history. Now is a crucial time to take action to defend the Xingu River.
Maracatu Mar Aberto
What is Maracatu? Maracatu is a manifestation from Recife, Pernambuco Brasil, and while we focus on the music of maracatu de baque virado, the tradition is rich. Acknowledging the universe that is Maracatu de Baque Virado, and the people who have brought this music and dance to where it is today: the Africans (kings, queens, farmers and warriors) enslaved in Brazil, who expressed art and community through this manifestation. Our style is traced through the lineage of Maracatu Estrela Brilhante do Recife and Mestre Walter de França, Trovão das Minas and Maracatu Nunca Antes.
We are a living tradition of maracatu in a local context; not a folkloric representation. Working collectively on the artistry and heritage that is maracatu de baque virado. Instructor: Alex Bordokas. Alex has played in Maracatu Estrela Brilhante de Recife since 2002 and founded Maracatu Nunca Antes in Toronto in late 2003.
